LaFace Records: The Cornerstone of ATL HipHop
1 year ago 0

Atlanta is rockin’ the music charts, radio and television nationwide. But any real Grady Baby knows that this empire wasn’t built over night. As a matter of fact, you may want to ask yourself, “Where would the ATL be if it wasn’t for the corner stone laid by LaFace Records?”

In the late 80’s and early 90’s, LA Reid and Baby Face were putting in work as they launched the careers of Outkast, Usher, TLC, Toni Braxton, Donnell Jones, Pink, Tony Rich, Young Bloodz and many more. The release of “Soul Food” by ATL’s own Goodie Mob, introduced a new sound and set the tone for rap music coming out of the Dirty South. This core group of artists set the stage for Atlanta’s ability to take over as the go-to city for the music industry while becoming the “Motown of the South”.

During the 90’s, the airwaves were flooded by hit records from Outkast, TLC, and Toni Braxton. However, after a series of breakups, lawsuits and bankruptcies, LaFace was eventually bought out by Arista where LA Reid went on to become Chairman/CEO. During the transition, most of LaFace’s roster of artists moved on up to the parent label.

Many people forget that the rapper formerly know as TIP released his debut album “I’m Serious” under the LaFace banner before being dropped and successfully reestablishing his career through a joint venture with Atlantic. Ultimately, LaFace was responsible for establishing the careers of iconic artists Outkast, TLC, and Usher along with providing work for super-producers Jermaine Dupri, Dallas Austin and Organized Noize. So after today’s history lesson – tell me, exactly where would Atlanta music be without LaFace Records?

Straight From The VIP: DJ Drama's Birthday Party @ Opera
1 year ago 0

Last Night DJ Drama celebrated his birthday at Opera with the homies Roscoe Dash, Fabolous, Jeezy, Chad Ocho Cinco, Big Shawn and too many more people to mention.  Seemed like Opera security lost control and let way too many people up on stage.  In fact, shout out to the big homie Drama for lettin the Opera staff have it for taking too long to let the real celebs in.  He left his own party to stand outside and make sure that shit was handled.

You know DDB was in the building – in fact the VIP was so crazy we had to take the VIP outside to the patio.  Bottles were flowin and Urp was in the air.  And yes the ladies were in the building goin hard.  Drama had a squad of half naked chicks and super model Tammy Torres (Lil Wayne’s Baby Momma) “entertaining” the VIP.  Drama and his lady pulled up real heavy in the Maybach 62 as the car show proceeded to shut shit down (literally).
